Play of the Day: The Democrats Hit the Debate Stage in Houston
Bernie Sanders had a raspy voice, Andrew Yang offered free money and Joe Biden talked about retro technology.
Ten Democrats debated in Houston on Thursday night and President Donald Trump's 2020 reelection campaign flew a banner over the city during the debate. Late Night's Seth Meyers joked about recent Trump news, saying the banner said "pray for Alabama" instead of its actual message.
During the debate, the candidates came out with big proposals. Andrew Yang announced that he would give 10 families no-strings-attached money before he is elected, prompting Jimmy Kimmel to joke that it sounds like a radio promo called "Thousand Dollar Thursday," while The Daily Show's Trevor Noah called him "Asian Oprah." Bernie Sanders had a scratchy-sounding voice, prompting Late Show's Stephen Colbert to joke that Sanders had a bumblebee in his throat and Kimmel to joke that Sanders' health care plan will give everyone "affordable access to lozenges." Joe Biden answered a question about his record on race by saying "Play the radio, make sure the television — excuse me, make sure you have the record player — on at night, make sure that kids hear words, a kid coming from a very poor school," prompting Colbert to joke about the septuagenarian Biden's grasp of technology, joking that Biden wants voters to "fire up the ol' victrola and get the new Mitch Miller" before trailing off.
