Watch: GOP Senate Candidate Compares Cutting Spending to Hog Castration

"I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm, so when I come to Washington, I'll know how to cut pork," state Sen. Joni Ernst says in the ad.

Upton Sinclair wrote that the meatpacking industry could "use everything about the hog except the squeal." Well, one Iowa Republican has found a way to use that squeal for a new ad for her Senate run.

"I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm, so when I come to Washington, I'll know how to cut pork," state Sen. Joni Ernst says in the ad, with folk music and pig squeals playing in the background.

Ernst is in a five-way race to secure the Republican nomination for Sen. Tom Harkin's seat. The Democrat is retiring after nearly 30 years in office. Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley is heavily favored to win the seat.

"Washington is full of big spenders," Ernst says toward the end of the ad, which features shots of pigs in wooden pens. "Let's make 'em squeal." A pig squeals at the conclusion of the ad.

The ad buy is going up on Des Moines area cable on Tuesday, and it will expand in the coming weeks.
