In symbolic move, House votes down Obama debt request

The House on Wednesday voted 239 to 176 to reject President Obama's request to raise the nation's $15.2 trillion borrowing authority by another $1.2 trillion, a symbolic step in the summertime deal to prevent the nation from going into default. But even if the Senate, in a later vote -- not yet scheduled -- also passes the joint resolution of disapproval, Obama can veto it. The vote reflected lingering resentment from many House Republicans over the August bargain, even some who had voted in favor of it.
