Park ranger dies in Mount Rainier rescue
Nick Hall had come to the aid of injured climbers who had fallen into a crevasse.
A climbing ranger at Mount Rainier National Park fell to his death Thursday while participating in a rescue of climbers on the mountain.
Nick Hall, 34, was preparing climbers who had fallen into a crevasse for helicopter rescue when he plunged down the mountain's northeast side at an elevation of 13,700 feet, the Seattle Times reported.
A National Park Service spokesman said Hall slid more than 3,000 feet down the side of the mountain, according to a report in The Mountain News-WA.
Three of the four climbers who were rescued were airlifted off the mountain late Thursday in Chinook helicopters from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. The other remained in a safe location on the mountain with NPS rangers. The evacuees were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Madigan Army Medical Center, the Seattle Times reported.
Hall is a four -year veteran of Mount Rainier National Park’s climbing program and a native of Patten, Maine, according to KIRO TV.
