Army Under Secretary Joseph Westphal

Army Under Secretary Joseph Westphal Defense Department

The Army's Leadership Challenge

A special briefing on the service's future featuring Undersecretary Joseph Westphal.

With the United States almost completely out of Iraq, and on its way out of Afghanistan, the Army faces a very different future. It's one in which budgets and forces will be smaller, technological challenges will increase, and strategic imperatives are likely to shift dramatically.

This, says Army Under Secretary Joseph Westphal boils down to a leadership challenge, and to face it, “we have to focus a lot more on leadership development, both on the military and civilian side.”

How exactly the service will develop its future leaders will be among the subjects of a Government Executive Leadership Briefing featuring Westphal next week in Washington. He'll also address the changing face of warfare, how to manage future deployments, the role of women in the force, efforts to control personnel costs, the future of the base closure process, and other pressing issues the Army faces.

This is the latest in a series of such briefings in which high-ranking federal officials (civilian and military) discuss the management imperatives they face.
