Bill seeks security notices at federal child care centers

A bill (H.R. 4519) to strengthen security for children in childcare facilities located in General Services Administration-controlled facilities was approved Wednesday by voice vote of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Under the bill, the GSA would have to notify parents about who are the tenants and what is the level of security in the building. Parents would also have to be notified of any serious threats to safety and of any changes in tenants.

Ranking Democrat Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., said he hoped the bill's scope could be broadened to include other federal facilities, such as those of the departments of Veterans' Affairs and Defense.
