Clinton approves 3.6 percent pay increase
President Clinton Wednesday signed an executive order authorizing a 3.1 percent across-the-board pay increase for federal employees next year, along with locality pay increases of 0.5 percent, for a total average federal pay increase of 3.6 percent next year.
In the executive order, Clinton endorsed the recommendations made by the Federal Salary Council in October on how the raises should be distributed in various areas around the country. Net pay increases in various localities will range from 3.54 percent to 4.02 percent.
In the Washington-Baltimore area, the 1999 raise will be 3.68 percent. Employees in San Francisco, Houston, Los Angeles and New York areas will get the largest increases, 4.02 percent.
The Office of Personnel Management has posted the locality rates for the General Schedule and the Senior Executive Service on its Web site.
