GENEROUS EMPLOYEES-"Washington area federal workers pledged a record $38 million to the 1997 Combined Federal Campaign. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater, who headed the program, says 51.5 percent of the area's employees contributed to the government's annual fundraiser for local charities" (The Washington Post).
RAISE FOR FIREFIGHTERS-"D.C. firefighters will be getting a 9.5 percent raise in their next paycheck. That's the word from Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Sen. Paul Sarbanes, D-Md., who say the raises have been approved by the D.C. Council and the D.C. Financial Control Board" (The Washington Post).
CLINTON SECRETARY IS CALLED MAIN TIE TO FORMER INTERN-"In his deposition defending himself against a sexual misconduct lawsuit, President Clinton repeatedly portrayed his secretary, Betty Currie, and not himself, as the principal who dealt with Monica S. Lewinsky, the former White House intern, said lawyers who have reviewed a transcript of the President's testimony" (The New York Times).
