BABBITT RESPONDS SHARPLY TO CASINO ALLEGATIONS-"Denouncing attacks on his integrity as "uncalled for and unwarranted," Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt told a House committee yesterday that he is being victimized by "a half-baked theory of improper political influence" involving his department's rejection of a proposed Indian casino in Hudson, Wis." (The Washington Post).

IN THE BUREAUCRACY, BUSINESS MUCH AS USUAL-"Interviews with officials at every major department this week produced the same answer: The White House crisis has had virtually no impact on the government's operations" (The Washington Post).

ADMINISTRATION SEEKS BOOST IN CANCER RESEARCH-"Saying scientists are "right on the verge" of a breakthrough in cancer research, Vice President Gore said yesterday the administration wants to increase federal funding by 65 percent over the next five years" (The Washington Post).
