DAILY BRIEFING

Happy Holi-Day Off

President Clinton announced today that Dec. 26 will be a holiday for federal employees.

When Christmas Day falls on a Thursday, as it does this year, Presidents have traditionally designated the following Friday as a federal holiday.

Heads of departments and agencies may order certain employees to report for duty on Dec. 26 for national security or "other public reasons," Clinton said.

The day after Thanksgiving is not a holiday, so federal employees must use annual leave with the approval of their supervisors to take the day off.

Clinton has not yet said if the day after New Year's Day will be a holiday. New Year's Day also falls on a Thursday this year.
