Army Secretary Picked for VA

President Clinton is expected to nominate Army Secretary Togo West to replace Jesse Brown as secretary of veterans affairs, the Associated Press has reported.

West would be Clinton's second pick to head the VA. Hershel Gober, nominated in July to replace Brown, withdrew his name last month after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced.

White House officials said the nomination is expected early next week.

West was a longtime Pentagon lawyer and top lobbyist for Northrop Corp. when Clinton selected him to become Army secretary in 1993. West also served as the top lawyer for the Navy and later the entire Defense Department during the Carter Administration.

West holds engineering and law degrees from Howard University. He joined the military in 1969.
