Play of the Day: The Lawsuit Against California's New Law
The president and the RNC are suing the Golden State, saying the law requiring candidates to release tax returns is a “naked political attack against the sitting president of the United States.”
During his visit to a hospital in El Paso after a mass shooting, President Donald Trump was caught on camera talking about his crowd sizes. Last Week Tonight's John Oliver joked about the video, saying Trump thought "remember that other time when I was the center of attention and it was better?" and the further thought process in the president's head as he spoke.
California passed a new law called "the Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act" that requires all presidential candidates to release their tax returns in order to get on the ballot. In response, Trump and the Republican Committee filed a pair of lawsuits, with one of the suits saying the law is a “naked political attack against the sitting president of the United States,” despite Trump never being mentioned in the law. Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked that the suit, doing an impression of Trump and saying "This is a naked attack and not the good kind like barging in on the Miss Teen USA dressing room." Jimmy Kimmel asked "what could possibly be worse that's in them than what we see everyday? Unless he's claiming Mike Pence as a dependent." Colbert also noted that the suit says the law “extra-constitutional qualification for the office of president," joking that other states have such laws involving filing fees and joked about Florida, saying candidates need to have their "get their petitions notarized by a licensed meth-addict alligator."
