Play of the Day: Wilbur Ross Is Not Helping Morale At Commerce

According to a report, the Commerce Department chief has been sleeping in meetings.

President Donald Trump brought up the idea of placing tariffs on French products, even saying "I've always liked American wines better than French wines. Even though I don't drink wine. I just like the way they look, OK?" Last Week Tonight's John Oliver joked about the quote, saying that it was in character for Trump and joked "He might as well have said 'I need my wines to be at least a DD.'"

According to a Politico report, the Commerce Department's morale is at a low point under chief Wilbur Ross. One insider told Politico that the department is at "an apex of dysfunction," prompting Late Show's Stephen Colbert to joke that "Apex of Dysfunction" could be the name of Ross' scream metal album. The Politico report also noted that the elderly Ross falls asleep in meetings sometimes, prompting Jimmy Kimmel to joke that Ross and HUD chief Ben Carson sometimes "curl up in each others' arms. " Colbert quoted one passage of story that said "political appointees sometimes close doors right in front of career employees," and joked "You know what they say: 'When God closes a door, the slam wakes up Wilbur Ross.'"
