An apparent smoke bomb was tossed over the White House fence Tuesday as between 1,000 and 1,500 Occupy Wall Street protesters "massed outside the gates," the Associated Press reports. No injuries were reported.

As the situation with the device was being resolved, people inside the White House were prevented from existing the building on the Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., side of the mansion. After being held in the White House briefing room for about 45 minutes, reporters were escorted out of the White House grounds to an exit on 17th Street, N.W., according to White House pool reports.

U.S. Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie told the AP that there were no arrests in the incident.
