GovExec Wins Eddie Award for 2018 Immigration Crackdown Series

The stories documented the Homeland Security Department’s struggle to hire thousands of new border security personnel.

Government Executive received an Eddie award for Best Series of Articles for its 2018 coverage of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration at the southwest border. Written by Senior Correspondent Eric Katz, the stories chronicled the Homeland Security Department’s challenges in ramping up staffing at Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The award was one of several picked up by Government Executive Media Group publications.

A joint Defense One and Nextgov investigation into the behind-the-scenes battle for the Pentagon’s $10 billion JEDI cloud contract was named Best Single Article. In “Someone Is Waging a Secret War to Undermine the Pentagon’s Huge Cloud Contract,” Defense One Executive Editor Kevin Baron, Technology Editor Patrick Tucker, and Nextgov Executive Editor Frank Konkel revealed that a private investigative firm was distributing inaccurate information about competitors, then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, and his Pentagon staff.

Defense One Radio was named Best Podcast for “Beyond South China Sea Tensions,” a two-episode series that explored the history and geopolitics of the disputed territory in “The Tinderbox” and “The CCP Vision and the Future of Chinese History.” Produced and hosted by News Editor Ben Watson, Defense One Radio shared the award as co-winner with Dear HBR, produced by Harvard Business Review.

Run by the Folio: media group, the 2019 Eddie & Ozzie Awards competition received some 2,500 entries from print and digital publications in 33 categories, including breaking news coverage, critical analysis and investigative reporting.
