Play of the Day: A Written State of the Union Is Trump's Nightmare

Will he put stage direction in it?

According to experts interviewed by the New York Times and other outlets, the partial government is going to shrink the economy more as it goes on longer. The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon joked about the news, saying President Donald Trump responded that it's only shrinking because it's cold outside.

Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi sent Trump a letter on Wednesday suggesting the State of the Union address be postponed or given in writing due to security issues caused by the shutdown. Fallon joked that it was such a power move that Russia's Vladimir Putin admired it, while Late Show's Stephen Colbert joked that Trump might start his address by saying "The state of our union is… all the Democrats' fault!" Pelosi's suggestion of giving the speech in writing prompted late-night hosts to make fun of Trump's typos on Twitter, with Colbert joking that Trump would write "The stat of our uniom is… STRANG" on Twitter. The Daily Show's Trevor Noah joked that Trump might write his signature hand movements into the written address, including the finger gun, the bouncy ball and the accordion.
