Play of the Day: Celebrating America's Independence During Turbulent Times
Considering the news, some find it hard to be excited about the United States on its birthday.
After Justice Antony Kennedy announced his retirement, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted "OMG! Just when you thought this week couldn't get more lit... I give you Anthony Kennedy's retirement from #SCOTUS". Last Week Tonight's John Oliver joked about the tweet, saying it ruined the word "lit" for young people and ruined a few slang words of his own.
As the United States celebrated its independence from Britain last week, late-night shows took note. Fox News' Greg Gutfeld was in a celebratory mood, so he showed a map graphic and joked that the U.S. hasn't gained a pound in 60 years. The Break's Michelle Wolf, on the other hand, joked that celebrating the U.S. in light of the family separation news at the border seems uncouth and that "the grill marks on a juicy burg" look "like a toddler cage."
