Play of the Day: Biblical Law in the American South
While Alabama uses the Bible to defend its gay marriage ban, another state is making the book an official symbol.
Wednesday marked the ninth anniversary of the day of former Vice President Dick Cheney shot his hunting companion Harry Whittington in the face in Texas. The Late Show's David Letterman marked the occasion by tying Cheney to another polarizing Texan's recent troubles.
After a federal court ruling saying their ban on same sex marriage is unconstitutional, Alabama's chief justice has advised probate-court judges not to issue licenses. This brought the ire of Jon Stewart, who dinged the state for its passage of an amendment banning 'foreign law,' considering the place of origin of the Bible. In related news, Seth Meyers joked about a proposal by a Tennessee lawmaker to make the Bible that state's official state book. Meyers took down the whole state and its place in the American obesity epidemic.
