CBO: Reid's $2.7 trillion plan is short by $500 billion

About half of the cuts in the plan would come from drawing down troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Senate's debt-reduction plan, said to offer $2.7 trillion in spending cuts, actually cuts closer to $2.2 trillion, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

About half of the cuts in the plan, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., would come from savings as the U.S. draws down troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, CBO said.

Wednesday's CBO analysis comes a day after a competing plan offered by House Speaker John Boehner also came short of its advertised spending cuts.
