Speaker pledges action on discrimination bill

Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., vows to pass legislation this year to bar workplace discrimination based on a person's sexual orientation.

Fresh off of last week's House vote to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy the office of House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Thursday said she remains committed to passing a bill this year to bar workplace discrimination based on a person's sexual orientation.

In addition, Pelosi said in a statement late Wednesday night that a bill sponsored by Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., "to erase additional barriers" against federal employees and their partners will continue to move forward in the House.

She issued the statement in response to President Obama's signing of a presidential memorandum expanding benefits for domestic partners of federal employees.

No specific timeline was provided by her office for floor action on either the proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act or Baldwin's bill.
