With the war in Afghanistan coming to a close, the military engaged in a long-term shift in attention to the Asia-Pacific region and severe belt-tightening underway at the Pentagon, the Defense Department faces an almost unprecedented set of challenges. That's why we at Government Executive Media Group and Atlantic Media launched Defense One, a digital publication focused on national security news, analysis and ideas, this summer.

Now we're taking the conversation live, with the inaugural Defense One Summit next month in Washington.

Here's Defense One Executive Editor Kevin Baron on the summit:

The Defense One Summit will gather an exclusive, highly concentrated audience of senior national security and defense leaders to look deep into the unprecedented transformation of national security strategy and operations facing U.S. leaders today. In July, Defense One created a new digital space for national security leaders, influential professionals, stakeholders and interested citizens to engage in in-depth news and analysis. Next, the Defense One Summit will convene this audience to debate the big ideas, share leadership lessons and have timely conversation about what comes next for all of us.

At the summit, Defense leaders, national security experts and military commanders will share insight into the most pressing issues at the future of defense from their unique vantage points. The event’s moderators include CBS News’ White House Correspondent Major Garrett, CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr and Al Jazeera America’s Jamie Tarabay, along with Baron and Associate Editor and Senior Reporter Stephanie Gaskell.

Here are the details on the summit:

  • Date: Nov. 14, 2013
  • Location: Grand Hyatt Hotel, Washington, D.C.
