GAO: One of the Best Places to Work in D.C.?

The agency has made one publication’s list two times in three years.

Government accountability is not everyone’s definition of “cool.”

In Washington, D.C., however, it’s about as cool as it gets. And now -- after being named one of the 10 coolest places to work in the city by employee relations firm O.C. Tanner earlier this year -- Washingtonian has just named the Government Accountability Office one of the 50 best places to work in D.C. This marks the second time in three years GAO has made the list.

Washingtonian will unveil its full list in the magazine’s December issue, but back in 2011 it cited GAO’s on-site daycare and fitness centers, as well as the agency’s lenient telework policy, as influential factors.

“GAO works hard to remain an employer of choice,” said GAO’s chief, Gene Dodaro, “and it is very gratifying that our workplace has earned a place on Washingtonian’s latest list.”

In 2012, GAO ranked second among mid-size agencies -- between 1,000 and 14,999 employees -- in the Partnership for Public Service’s annual list of best places to work. So, whether it’s auditing the management of American battle monuments or exploring the weaknesses of maritime security, it’s clear GAO employees love their work.
