Feds To Shake Out For Earthquake Drill

Don't be alarmed if you see your colleagues dive under their desks at 10:15 a.m. on April 28. It's just a drill.

The departments of Homeland Security and Education are encouraging schools, government agencies and anyone else who's interested, to participate in the first-ever multistate earthquake drill in the central and southern United States next week.

Nearly 30,000 federal employees in the Midwest and South have registered to participate, in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut drill including workers from DHS, the Defense Department, the National Park Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. Overall, more than 2 million people have registered to participate in the drill.

So what are you supposed to do as part of the exercise? Drop, Cover and Hold On as if there's an earthquake occurring (not to be confused with fire's Stop, Drop and Roll), and stay in that position for at least 60 seconds.

Remember, this is just a drill. To bone up on what to do in an actual earthquake, check out these tips.
