Deputy Energy Secretary leaving

Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Moler is leaving the department today after 30 years of public service.

Moler, who previously served as chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and senior counsel to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, played a key role in developing the Clinton administration's electricity restructuring legislation. At FERC, she also oversaw deregulation of the natural gas industry.

In a statement, President Clinton said Moler's "hard work has helped us address America's energy needs ... and pursue programs that foster environmental protection and safety while promoting economic growth."

Energy Secretary Bill Richardson said he had hoped Moler would stay on as part of his team. Moler was passed over more than once for Richardson's job.
