Senate votes to limit base closings

The Senate voted 48-45 today to withhold congressional approval for the Pentagon's plan for two new base-closing rounds in 2001 and 2005, the Associated Press reports.

Senators approved a measure that would require the Pentagon to complete previous base closing rounds before starting new ones and would aim to keep open bases that have at least 225 civilian employees.
