Advisory committees dwindle, but costs don't
Since 1993, when President Clinton declared that federal advisory committees were growing "like kudzu," the number of such panels has gone down from 1,305 to 963, Gannett News Service reports. But according to the General Accounting Office, more than 36,000 people served on such committees last year, up from 28,000 in 1993--and costs went up, too, from $144 million to $178 million.
