Air Force Lt. Col. Eileen Collins is lifting off a barrier to women as the first female commander of a NASA space mission. President Clinton congratulated Collins at a White House ceremony last week. She has flown on two space flights, and will command a Columbia space shuttle mission in December.
Arthur Levitt Jr., chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, isn't planning on going anywhere. President Clinton plans to nominate Levitt for a second five-year term, which would make Levitt only the second SEC chairman to serve more than one term.
Gary W. Amlin is done acting. After six months as acting director, Amlin's been appointed as the official director of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Amlin is a 30-year veteran of government financial management, and will now sit at the helm of an organization that processes $22 billion in payments per month.

On the Hill, House Agriculture Committee counsel John E. Hogan retired after a 23-year stint at the committee, while House Ways and Means Committee counsel Dean A. Rosen left his committee for the Health Insurance Association of America, where he will be senior vice president of policy and information and association counsel.
