RICH AWARDS AWAIT SOME HILL RETIREES-"Longtime service in Congress pays nicely at retirement, with some lawmakers going home with annual pensions of roughly $100,000 -- about five times the national average, according to the National Taxpayers Union, a conservative group that advocates less government spending" (The Washington Post).

POWELL'S CHOPPING BLOCK-"Former Carter White House spokesman and now mega-P.R. type Jody Powell is on injured reserve, recovering from a heart attack he suffered on Dec. 21. Seems Powell, 54, was cutting firewood on his huge spread on the Eastern Shore near Cambridge when he felt sharp chest pains, then pain in his left arm, then general weakness" (The Washington Post).

HERMAN ACCUSER UNDER FIRE, CLINTON DEFENDS LABOR CHIEF-"The Cameroon businessman who has accused Labor Secretary Alexis Herman and his former business partner Vanessa Weaver of influence peddling was accused Thursday by Ms. Weaver's lawyers of a host of misdeeds, including sexual harassment, looting his business of $100,000 and blackmail. As the countercharges flew, President Clinton quickly rose to the defense of Herman, whose nomination was jeopardized last year over questions involving her ethics. Herman, too, appeared before television cameras to deny any wrongdoing, before flying with Clinton to New York for a day of politicking" (The New York Times).
