After 11 years as inspector general at the Energy Department, John C. Layton is retiring early next year.
Layton, 53, a onetime FBI special agent who earlier in his career served as the Defense Department's inspector general, will perhaps best be remembered for his 1996 report on the questionable travel expenses of then-Energy Secretary Hazel R. O'Leary. His findings fueled heated congressional hearings on his ex-boss's allegedly lavish globe-trotting.
"That was an interesting time," says Layton.
But he adds that he's accomplished "more significant things" during his tenure, like his audits of bureaucratic big-spending aimed at saving taxpayer money.
Layton says he's still trying to figure out what he'll do next.
