Lee B. Holcomb is the new chief information officer at NASA, and Shereen Remez will take over as the General Services Administration's CIO on Jan. 4.
Both appointments follow the retirements of veteran CIOs--Ronald S. West at NASA and Joe Thompson at GSA.
Holcomb moved into the CIO chair after six months as director for information technology strategy and CIO in the space agency's Aeronautics Office. From 1995 to 1997, he directed the Aviation Systems Technology Division, after four years as director of the High Performance Computing and Communications Office. A specialist in parallel computing and a 22-year NASA veteran, he worked on the Magellan and Voyager space missions, as well as the space shuttle program.
At GSA, Remez is currently assistant CIO for planning and IT architecture. She has 27 years of federal experience, primarily in communications and IT capital planning. Remez joined GSA's old IT Service after stints in several Health and Human Services agencies.
GSA Administrator David J. Barram also promoted Donald Heffernan to deputy CIO. Heffernan will replace Donald Venneberg, who is retiring. The new deputy will retain his current responsibilities as assistant CIO for information infrastructure and support.
