Congress' Endgame

Congress' Endgame

House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, insisted today he wants to wrap up this year's session by Friday or this weekend, but Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., said while the Senate will "be leaving on a Friday," Nov. 14 is more likely than this Friday, adding that he intends Nov. 14 to be the "outside date" for adjournment.

Armey said he expects the House to consider IRS reform legislation Wednesday, and that many House members want to vote on Senate- passed legislation overturning the president's line item veto of military construction projects.

Lott said that, in addition to consideration of fast track trade negotiating authority, the Senate will continue to clear nominations of judges, ambassadors and others from the executive calendar.

Lott said the Senate could take up the fiscal 1998 District of Columbia appropriations bill Wednesday, and potentially the Amtrak reauthorization bill in the next two days. He also mentioned some "non-controversial" bills he would like to move, including the FDA reform conference report.
