A Few Good Women
Though the military opened about 47,500 combat-related jobs to women, females fill only 815 of those positions, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
According to a study commissioned by the Defense Department, women did not take advantage of jobs Congress made available to them in 1993 and 1994 because of a lack of training. It also found a significant reluctance on the part of some commanders to abide by the law and allow women to fill the vacancies. In addition, women make up only 14 percent of the armed forces.
The report is to be officially released Wednesday.
