Gingrich Vows Fight on Waste

House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that laying the foundation for another tax cut in 1998 will involve an an attack on "waste, fraud and error" in the federal government.

Among those programs the speaker particularly wants to focus on - according to his spokeswoman - are IRS tax collection, administration of the Earned Income Tax Credit, Medicare and agency compliance with the Government Performance and Results Act.

Gingrich said the House's priorities this month would include fiscal 1998 appropriations bills and FDA reform, which he called a "very, very important" initiative both for making new medications available more quickly and for creating jobs in the biotechnology sector.

Gingrich also mentioned a number of bills "we would like to look at," such as the international religious persecution legislation by Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., reauthorization of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act - which he said "we would like to get to if we can this fall."
