FAA Staffing Called Inadequate
"The operation has been a travesty over the years, and it hasn't gotten better; it's gotten worse," said Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, R-N.Y., according to the Associated Press.
D'Amato has long accused the FAA of poor management in the New York metropolitan area.
"It's a disaster waiting to happen," he said.
The FAA's acting deputy administrator, Monte Belger, contended that the New York skies are "absolutely safe."
New York lawmakers said the FAA's New York center, which controls traffic over New York, New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland, is supposed to have 339 fully trained controllers. Instead it only has 308.
