DoD's No. 2 to Resign

Deputy Secretary of Defense John White will resign in June, the Defense Department said Thursday.

White sent a letter to Defense Secretary William Cohen explaining that he would stay on until June to complete the Quadrennial Defense Review, The Washington Post reported Thursday. White had agreed to stay at the department until the transition from William Perry to Cohen was completed and the review process was wrapped up.

"The time has now come for me to move on to new challenges," White said in his letter.

In a response to the letter, Cohen thanked White for his "strong leadership and guidance."

White is not sure what he will do after he steps down.

Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon told Reuters that "it's a little early to be talking about [replacement] names. The secretary will probably review options both inside and outside of the department."
