20th Annual May Training Program

The 20th annual May Training Program will be held at the Arlington [Texas] Convention Center from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Tuesday, May 13th and Wednesday, May 14, 1997. The two-day training program consists of 13 professional speakers who will present 20 different workshops on a wide variety of topics such as motivation, organizational improvement, successful writing, sexual harrassment, communication strategies, career advancement, and many more. Some workshop titles include:

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) Seminar

This two-day seminar scheduled for May 1 and 2 at OPM [in Washington, DC], is designed to help Employee Assistance Program counselors and other mental health professionals in developing and managing a CISD team. THE FEDERAL DIARY--"Perhaps as many as a dozen federal agencies will offer buyouts to a limited number of employees starting in October. When buyout opportunities present themselves, they will come with little warning and be available only for a short time" (The Washington Post).

COMMUNICATIONS--Douglas K. Walker has been named Director of Communications of OPM. Walker will direct media relations, policy development, public affairs and internal communications for the agency (Office of Communications News Release, April 16)...Rosa M. Grillo has been named Deputy Director of Communications by OPM Director Jim King. She will assist the Director of Communications in developing and implementing communications policy and managing OPM's public information programs (Office of Communications News Release, April 16).

FEDERAL ISSUES--OPM says privatization of investigations successful (FEND's Government Performance Report, April 7 and Government Employee Relations Report, April 7)...Agencies told to use job training rolls in hiring welfare recipients (Government Employee Relations Report)...

WELFARE TO WORK--The District has the worst job training performance in the nation and may fail to comply with a federal mandate to help 3,008 welfare recipients find jobs by October 1, city and federal officials said yesterday (The Washington Post).

SSA--Legislation has been introduced to make it illegal for credit bureaus to disseminate Social Security numbers, unlisted telephone numbers, birth dates and mothers' maiden names (The Washington Post).
