The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reorganized its divisions this week to comply with a clause in its 1997 congressional authorization.
The Corps reduced its divisions from ten to eight by combining its North Lakes Division with its Ohio River Division to form the new Great Lakes and Ohio River Division and combining its North Pacific Division with the Missouri River Division to form the new Northwestern Division.
A Corps spokesman said there would be no staff reductions or relocations. There were also no movements of funds, demotions, promotions, changes in responsibilities, or perceivable differences for customers. Two former division commanders, the most deeply affected people in the restructuring, will keep their offices and their military ranks, but will now be called deputy commanders instead of commanders. Their duties will not change, the spokesman said.
"The new structure of the corps will ensure continued customer service," said Lt. Gen. Joe Ballard, chief of engineers.
The restructuring was mandated by the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act of 1997.
