SSA Chief Leaving
According to a report in The Washington Post, Social Security Administration Commissioner Shirley Chater has resigned from her post effective January 31.
After SSA was made an independent agency last year, Chater was nominated to serve a fixed term as its administrator, but she was never confirmed by the Senate.
Chater is the longest-serving commissioner in 20 years, having held the post for more than three years.
According to her biography on SSA's Web site, Chater was president of Texas Woman's University and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of California-San Francisco before becoming Social Security commissioner.
