Soldier found guilty of killing Afghan civilians for sport

Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs faces a maximum sentence of life without parole.

Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, who was accused of being the ringleader of an Army unit that killed three Afghan civilians for sport, has been found guilty on all charges, The New York Times reports.

A five-member panel at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state rendered the verdict after a court martial. Gibbs was found guilty of three counts of murder, of conspiring to commit murder, and several other charges.

The prosecutors' case was largely built on the testimony of the other soldiers, including those who have pleaded guilty in connection with the crimes.

Gibbs faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
