Attack on CIA office in Kabul kills one

Assailant was a lone Afghan employee, embassy spokesman says.

An attack by an Afghan gunman left one American citizen dead and wounded another at the CIA office in Kabul late on Sunday. U.S. Embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said the attacker was a "lone Afghan employee," and a western security official in Kabul said he "had the trust" of employees in the offices, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The security official also suspected that the assailant may have fired on the U.S. Embassy from the roof of the CIA office. Witnesses told The Journal they heard gunfire about 8:15 p.m. Kabul time, then an explosion, more gunfire, and two more explosions.

One witness, an American security official, said the gunfire sounded like it came from an M4-carbine -- an indication that the assailant had access to American weapons.
