The Federal Acquisition Regulation, a comprehensive guide to how the government can buy things, lists more than 100 items that are excluded from the Buy American Act because they have been deemed unavailable in the United States. The following are some examples:

  • Bananas
  • Beef, corned, canned, and extract
  • Brazil nuts, unroasted
  • Cobra venom
  • Cocoa beans
  • Coffee, raw or green bean
  • Diamonds, industrial, stones and abrasives
  • Goat hair canvas
  • Grapefruit sections, canned
  • Hog bristles for brushes
  • Lavender oil
  • Modacrylic fur ruff
  • Olive oil
  • Opium, crude
  • Rabbit fur felt
  • Spices and herbs, in bulk
  • Swords and scabbards
