IN BRIEF

  • Long Time Coming. Contrary to employee perceptions, minorities are getting a better break in government than in the private sector. "Fair and Equitable Treatment: A Progress Report on Minority Employment in the Federal Government," finds minority employment higher in government (29 percent) than in the overall workforce (27 percent). The report, the subject of Government Executive's April 1996 cover story, was issued August 22. To order a copy, call (202) 653-6772, ext. 1350.
  • A Word to the Wired. In search of techno-tips? Try the General Services Administration's new office of information technology. From Year 2000 best practices to business process reengineering, the office is everywhere the IT-literate want to be. Part of GSA's governmentwide policy shop, the IT office will help new agency chief information officers get their footing and be the hub for federal Webmasters.
  • Plane Speaking. With airplanes and their parts falling out of the sky at what seems a record rate, Eliot Brenner becomes the voice of the Federal Aviation Administration. Brenner was a speechwriter for Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin and Lloyd Bentsen and Defense Secretary Dick Cheney. He spent 19 years covering the Pentagon, aviation and politics as a reporter and editor with United Press International.
