Belated Kudos for Award-Winning Execs

W

hat shouldn't have been such a well-kept secret was recently revealed: The highest honor accorded each year to senior federal executives went to 66 members of the Senior Executive Service last year. They were designated as Distinguished Executives under the Presidential Rank Awards program. Each was honored with a $20,000 bonus for "sustained extraordinary accomplishment."

Some were feted within their agencies. But there was no official, governmentwide celebration. The Office of Personnel Management, which manages the program, was waiting for a session that would bring the awardees together with President Clinton. But that day never came.

On May 16, the awardees were finally honored at an elegant, black-tie dinner held by the Senior Executives Association at the State Department diplomatic reception rooms. Vice President Gore did meet that day for a hastily scheduled photo opportunity with the winners.

Listed below are last year's Distinguished Executives. Another 152 executives won $10,000 bonuses as Meritorious Executives.
