Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and Defense civilians gathered to honor those killed in the attack on the Pentagon, then returned to the job of shoring up the facility and preparing an assault on terrorism.
As the estimated death toll in the attack on the Pentagon climbed to 190, the Defense Department moved to help in lower Manhattan and prepared for a possible U.S. military response.
