Migrating into the Future: Senior Federal Officials on Cloud Technology Challenges

The role of cloud technology in government is constantly expanding. Changes in technical capabilities, a shifting policy landscape, and trailblazing government leaders meet at an unexpectedly dynamic intersection: the nation’s largest federal agencies.

The declaration of a ‘cloud-first strategy’ in 2011, launch of the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) in 2012, and implementation of the Data Center Optimization Initiative (DCOI) in 2016 have pushed cloud migration at a rapid pace. However, though the federal government began its big cloud push in 2009, some agencies are still in the nascent stages of their migrations and seek lessons from seasoned colleagues.

To find out more, Government Business Council (GBC) ― the research arm of Government Executive Media Group ― conducted a series of interviews with federal technology leaders about their experiences with and perspectives on cloud adoption in government. These experts’ insights are intended to inform and guide leaders facing similar obstacles and to provide an overview of the state of federal cloud migration.
