John Hanson has been nominated as assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs, President Clinton announced recently. Hanson has served as VA's deputy assistant secretary for intergovernmental affairs and oversees VA's homeless veterans assistance programs and consumer affairs initiatives.

Mary Carol Lewis has been appointed associate assistant secretary for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Lewis currently serves as OSHA Director Charles N. Jeffress' chief of staff and will continue those duties in her new post. Lewis came to OSHA in 1998 from the North Carolina Department of Labor, where she served as bureau chief for health compliance.

Donna D. Beecher has been selected as the Department of Agriculture's human resources management director, USDA Secretary Dan Glickman announced last week. Beecher previously worked at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management for 12 years in the human resources division. In her new position, Beecher will be responsible for direction, leadership and oversight of USDA's human resources policies, including safety and health management and labor management.

Rose Eileen Gottemoeller has been named the Department of Energy's first assistant secretary for nonproliferation and national security. In her new position, Gottemoeller oversees DoE's Office of Research and Development, International Nuclear Safety, Arms Control and Nonproliferation, Safeguards and Security, and Emergency Operations.

Dr. Jan Ferguson has been chosen to receive the Defense Department's Environmental Security Award for Individual Excellence in Cultural Resources during 1998. Ferguson is being honored for her efforts to preserve the historic legacy of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (AFB). Wright-Patterson AFB's roots trace back to 1917. The base has more than 260 historic buildings and two dozen prehistoric and historic archaeological sites that Ferguson has actively sought to preserve.

The Air Force has selected seven candidates for the Defense Leadership and Management Program (DLAMP). Harro Ackerman, Kirtland AFB, N.M., Douglas L. Bowers, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, Aaron D. Brinson, Eglin AFB, Fla., Steven J. Mozes, Wright-Patterson AFB, Joe Sciabica, Kirtland AFB, L. Bruce Simpson , Eglin AFB, and John F. Tangney, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Arlington, Va. were all selected from the Air Force Research Laboratory for the program. DLAMP provides training and development opportunities to prepare civilians for managing within the Defense Department.

The AH-1F Cobra helicopter has been retired from the Army. The Vietnam-era gunship was the Army's first dedicated attack aircraft. The helicopter has been used in every major U.S. military operation since Vietnam. The model continues to be used by the U.S. Marines and in eight foreign nations.
