The chairmen and ranking members of Congress' tax writing committees yesterday asked the Joint Committee on Taxation to investigate allegations that IRS officials were politically motivated in their choice of audits for tax-exempt organizations.
"We are troubled by recent reports alleging politically motivated treatment of certain tax exempt organizations and individuals," House Ways and Means Chairman Archer and ranking member Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., and Senate Finance Chairman Roth and ranking member Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y., said in their letter to JCT Chief of Staff Ken Kies.
"These allegations are very serious and should be carefully reviewed as expeditiously as possible," they added. The members also requested a report on the allegations be completed by Sept. 15.
