his supplement celebrating winners of the Service to America medals was produced by the reporters and editors of Government Executive magazine, a publication of National Journal Group.

The medals program recognizes commitment to public service and career achievements in the federal service. Medalists were chosen from among 28 finalists out of a field of close to 400 nominees. Final decisions were made by a group of national leaders.

Following is a description of the medal categories.

FEDERAL EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

Honors the best and brightest of the federal workforce and comes with a $10,000 award.

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT

Recognizes lifetime achievement in public service by an employee with at least 20 years of service. The award is $10,000.

CALL TO SERVICE

Goes to a recent entrant to the federal workforce who has made a significant contribution to the country. The award is $5,000.

SERVICE TO AMERICA

Each accompanied by a $3,000 award, these medals recognize accomplishments in specific fields of federal service:

  • National Security and International Affairs
    Includes intelligence, defense and diplomacy.
  • Environment, Science and Technology
    Includes resource preservation, wildlife protection, space and biomedicine.
  • Social Services
    Includes education, health care, and community development and assistance programs.
  • Justice
    Includes law enforcement, criminal justice and civil rights.
  • Business and Commerce
    Includes economics, trade, small business assistance, finance and information technology.
