Secure e-mail is yours for a price
he software and hardware elements of the Defense Message System, the worldwide Defense Department system that's under development, are available on the open market to any organization willing to pay for an electronic mail system with delivery guarantees, authentication and non-repudiation, and other secure features. Non-repudiation means the true sender can't deny originating the message.
In one of the latest developments, Lotus Development Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. announced they expect to have Java-based DMS client software for computers running the Sun Solaris operating system, a Unix variant, available early next year. For very high security, the e-mail package also will run on Trusted Solaris, one of the most secure operating systems available commercially.
