Service members must make change to Roth TSP deductions

An upcoming change in the Defense Finance and Accounting Service's myPay will require active duty members of the Army, Air Force and Navy to designate Roth Thrift Savings Plan contributions as a percentage of pay—rather than a dollar amount.

An upcoming change in the Defense Finance and Accounting Service's myPay will require active duty members of the Army, Air Force and Navy to designate Roth Thrift Savings Plan contributions as a percentage of pay—rather than a dollar amount.

While the new requirement takes effective Jan. 1, service members will have 30 days to make the change. Members must make the change from a dollar amount to a percentage before Jan. 31, or DFAS will stop processing their Roth deductions until the change is made.

The change will let service members track their contributions to date, and avoid having to update a dollar amount as their pay rises—instead, the dollar amount will rise to match the designated percentage.

Contributions to the traditional TSP already are designated as a percentage of pay.

A service member can make the change by logging into his or her myPay account, going to the "Traditional TSP and Roth TSP" section, and then the "Contribution from Roth TSP" section, where they can enter the percentage of pay to contribute and save the change.
